Step into Lynn Rice’s Together Designs, and you’ll find go-to pieces that fit your personal style. From clothing and jewelry to car seat covers and bibs, there’s a wide range of handcrafted items designed to add a touch of individuality to your everyday life. But Lynn’s store isn’t just about her own creations — it’s also a space for other talented artisans to showcase their work.
A partner since the gates first opened in 2022, we had the chance to chat with Lynn about her journey, what sparked a passion for her business, and her thoughts on being a part of the Container Village.
Q: What’s your favourite colour?
A: Pink!
Q: Where did you get the idea for your business?
A: My mom taught me to sew and make my own clothes growing up. Today, when I’m working on my designs, I find a lot of happiness in the memories and in knowing I’m sharing my love of fashion with others.
Q: How did you come up with the name of your business?
A: My mom and I used to spend so much quality time together sewing, so ‘Together Designs’ just felt right. Now, being here at AREA 506 and collaborating with over 12 designers, the name feels like an even better fit.
Q: Did you have a different job before you opened your business? What did you do?
A: I’m actually still a hairstylist.
Q: Is your container village location your first brick-and-mortar retail shop?
A: Yes, it is!
Q: Why did you want to set up shop at AREA 506?
A: I was excited about the idea of having a storefront in the Container Village because it’s such a fresh and exciting spot in Saint John. I saw this as a great opportunity for artists to come together in one place and showcase their work to visitors from around the world.
Q: Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?
A: Honestly, no. I’m really happy with where I’ve ended up and wouldn’t change the path I took.
Q: What do you consider your biggest success?
A: I’d say my biggest success is seeing our community of artisans come together. By providing them with a platform that minimizes start-up costs and time commitments, I’m helping them focus on doing what they love — creating. And personally, achieving my dream of having my own store has been a major milestone for me.
Q: What’s next?
A: There’s nothing set in stone right now, but I’m looking forward to growing Together Designs. I want to keep expanding my adult and kids’ clothing lines, and continue adding more handmade items to our collection.
